History of Chiryu (Development)

The Era Meiji (1868-1912)

1889 Four cities—Chiryu-cho, Ushihashi-mura, Kamishigehara-mura and Nagasaki-mura—established in current city region due to enforcement of municipal organization.
1906 Chiryu established through consolidation of smaller municipalities.

The Era Taisho (1912-1926)

1915 Mikawa Railway opened between Kariya and Chiryu.
1923 Aichi Electric Railway opened between Arimatsu and Chiryu.
1925 Banks of Aizuma River collapsed due to heavy rain.

The Era Showa (1926-1989)

1938 Chiryu Elementary School opened in Hanayama and higher elementary school opened in Higashi Hiromi.
1945 Chiryu High School opened under new school system.
1951 Reconstruction of Chiryu Municipal Government Building.
1952 Establishment of Chiryu Board of Education.
1953 Chiryu Bulletin launched.
1954 Chiryu branch of Kariya High School built in Chonagi, Kami-Shigehara-cho.
1957 City emblem (current version) established.
1958 Chiryu High School opened when Chiryu branch of Kariya High School moved and became independent.
1959 Chiryu Station moved to current location. "Typhoon Isewan" hit city.
1964 Water works supply initiated. Chiryu bypass Route 1 opened.
1965 Maternal and Child Health Center established. Aizuma Sanitary Disposal Association’s human-waste treatment plant completed.
1966 Japan Housing Corporation's Chiryu housing complex opened and occupied.
1967 Chiryu-cho Cleaning Service Association’s waste incinerator in Kariya completed. Chiryu-cho School Catering Center completed. Chiryu Higashi Elementary School opened.
1970 Traffic Accident Insurance Plan Mutual Aid Association inaugurated in Nishi Mikawa Shichi Machi (now Nishigo-cho). Organized as a municipality (December 1).
1971 Chiryu Fire Headquarters and Fire Department inaugurated.
1972 Yatsuhashi Water Distribution Facilities completed.
1973 Chiryu City Comprehensive Plans formulated. Zelkova selected as municipal tree and Iris as municipal flower.
1974 Chiryu Nishi Elementary School opened. Route 155 bypass completed.
1976 Yatsuda Elementary School opened.
1978 Chiryu Citizens’ Oath established. New Municipal Government Building completed and transferred, and Central Community Center opened.
1979 Chiryu Minami Elementary School opened. Saruwatari Community Center opened. Fire Department office building completed and transferred. Chiryu Culture Plaza completed.
1980 Second Chiryu City Comprehensive Plan formulated.
1981 Kinuura East Extensive Government Area Council established.
1982 Welfare gymnasium opened. Chiryu Minami High School opened.
1983 Route 23 Chiryu bypass opened.
1984 Third Chiryu City Comprehensive Plan formulated. Health Center opened.
1985 Municipal management parking lot constructed in front of train station.
1986 Yatsuhashi Historic Site Preservation Museum opened. Chiryu Higashi High School opened. Clean Center opened. 1987 Water Palace KC opened. Chiryu City Center Library and Chiryu City Folk Historical Museum opened.

The Era Heisei (1989 - )

1990 Chiryu’s bunraku puppet shows and clockwork mechanisms on floats designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset.
1993 Fourth Chiryu City Comprehensive Plan formulated. Chiryu welfare village of Yatsuda opened.
1994 Friendship City Agreement with Ina city in Nagano Prefecture concluded.
1995 Agreement regarding mutual assistance in disasters with Ina City concluded. Outdoor center completed.
1998 Chiryu Web site established.
2000 Sister-city relationship with Wyndham, Australia, concluded. Ririo branch of Chiryu municipal government opened. Chiryu cultural hall (Patio Chiryu) opened.
2001 Chiryu declared as a lifelong learning city.
2003 Fifth Chiryu City Comprehensive Plan formulated. Kinuura East Extensive Area Union (fire department) inaugurated.
2004 Kinuura Toyota road opened.
2005 Basic regulations of Chiryu town development established.
2006 Chiryu volunteer and civil activities initiated.
