Yatsuhashi Irises in the Tale of Ise is in full bloom in the sixteen ponds of the circuit-style garden. During the festival period, various events are held, such as photography events and tea ceremonies.
Irises in Yatsuhashi has been a well-known beautiful spot for irises since the ancient times of the Tales of Ise, as Narihira Ariwara, a poet during the Heian Period, used the five-character word “iris” as the prefix words for one poem, saying “Although this jacket may become relaxing as I wear it, on this journey far from home, I miss my wife left back at home.”
The area of the garden is approximately 13,000 m² with sixteen ponds (5,000 m²), and approximately 30,000 “Irises” are planted in the garden.
The Iris Festival has a long history and it began to be held 55 years ago. The festival is held during the period from April 27 through May 26, and almost 250,000 visitors from throughout Japan visit the garden.
As you may imagine based on the fact that the “iris” is the prefectural flower of Aichi Prefecture as well as of Chiryu City, this festival is the largest event of all.

During the festival period, various events are held, such as a “Tea Ceremony,” “Bonsai Exhibition,” “Haiku Club,” “Shigin Song Competition,” and “Treasures Exhibition” as well as a “Photo Club of Shooting Historical Site Yatsuhashi Irises.”
You can enjoy Irises at any time during the festival period, but the best time to view them is in early May, when the flowers are in full bloom.
Night lighting is provided until 9:00 P.M. every night during the period, so you can bring your friends and families.
