Muryojuji Temple

This is an important temple of the historical site of Yatsuhashi, and it currently belongs to the Myoshinji sect of the Rinzai School of Zen. According to temple legend, it is believed that the temple was built in the first year (704) of Keiun during the Nara Period.

Afterward, the Honorable Hogan Baisa rebuilt it in the 9th year of Bunka (1812), and the Iris Garden was also completed at that time.

The Preservation Pavilion of Yatsuhashi Historical Sites is located on the grounds, and hundreds of cultural assets are stored there, such as the history and culture of Yatsuhashi Kakitsubata, documents associated with Narihira Ariwara and a bamboo chest created by Hogan Baisa (prefecturally designated cultural assets).

Furthermore, the temple is famous as a beauty spot for “Irises” that bloom in May.

Hitomoto Silver Grass

It is believed that the grass was planted after the historical event of “Tsutsui Zutsu,” a script of Noh. Legend says that tying a blade of grass into a knot with one hand will make your dream come true, so the plant became known as silver grass of the love knot.

Although Narihira’s lover, “Iris Princess,” finally reached Yatsuhashi after he departed on his journey to the East from the distant capital, Narihara had already left Yatsuhashi. It is believed that she was devastated and threw herself into the nearby water (the present Aizuma River) to die.
