Acquisition of information in case of disasters

Try to acquire accurate information in the case of a disaster!

Acquire information, including warnings, forecast information (alerting information), or information on evacuation from the radio, TV, or public relations officers of your city. Do not be confused by unsubstantiated information.

What are “Reports,” “Advisories,” and “Warnings” for a Tokai Earthquake?

Information on a Tokai Earthquake was revised on January 5, 2006.

Many “strain indicators” are processed in the area of the surmised epicenter of a Tokai Earthquake. When the indicators display exceptional data, the following information is dispatched.

Tokai Earthquake Report

• At least one strain indicator
• Cannot determine the possible precursor of a Tokai Earthquake.

A municipality and many other organizations involved have set up a system for gathering information. In case there is no relevance to a Tokai Earthquake, it will be stated in a Report.

Tokai Earthquake Advisory

• More than two strain indicators
• When a possible precursor of a Tokai Earthquake is acknowledged.

A municipality and many other organizations involved get ready.
Residents are asked to prepare for evacuation.

Tokai Earthquake Warning

• More than three strain indicators.
• When the possibility of another Tokai Earthquake is acknowledged.

A municipality sets up an Earthquake Disaster Warning Headquarter.
Residents are asked to remain calm and not rush in an evacuation, but prepare to evacuate.

Newspapers, TV, and/or radio will deliver information on a Tokai Earthquake. Public information cars and announcements on the disaster speaker network as well as the disaster siren will inform you of “Advisories” and “Prediction Information (Warnings)”

* Advisories and Prediction Information (Warnings) are called off when there is no possibility of a Tokai Earthquake occurring.
* When a Prediction Information (Warnings) is issued, you are asked to remain ready at your home instead of evacuating immediately. Alternatively, you are asked to remain ready outside, free from danger when you are concerned about the quake-resistance of your home.

Types of evacuation sirens

* Beside announcements on the disaster speaker network, public information cars traverse the city.

Acquisition of information from TV and radio

Information relevant to your neighborhood or detailed information will be broadcast on local broadcasting stations, community FM, or cable TV.

In particular, the radio is useful in the case of a blackout. The radio was the major source of information when Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurred.
