Toneriko (Fraxinus japonica) is a deciduous tall tree that belongs to Oleaceae, otherwise known as Satotoneriko (Fraxinus japonica Blume). They grow wild in the mountain terrain in the midlands or north of the mainland, and they are planted in gardens or along paths in rice fields. Toneriko is a dioecism blooming light green flowers in spring with pinnate compound leaves. The bark is used to treat neuralgia, rheumatism, and dysentery etc., and the rigid and springy wood is used in construction, furniture, and baseball bats. The toneriko at Chiryu shrine is said to be the oldest tree in West Mikawa, with a height of 6 m, branch span of 8.3 m, 3.4-m-long roots, and root thickness of 1.95 m.
