Chonaikai is a body (voluntary group) for people who live in a certain location. Its primary purposes are offering opportunities for residents to interact with each other, offering help and cooperation to each member in case of emergency and troubles, and contributing to the development of a comfortable and hospitable town.
Main activities and Projects
The following are the main activities and projects implemented by Chonaikai.
Maintenance of the environment of community life
Cleaning up entire town, cooperation with and instruction of separated collection of recyclable garbage, etc.
Improvement of social welfare for community residents
Promotion of and aid for children’s clubs and clubs for the elderly, participation in radio broadcast calisthenics, etc.
Security, accident prevention, and other safety efforts related to daily life in the community
Road safety, security, and voluntary accident prevention activities, etc.
Sound improvement of the community and promotion of friendship among residents
Bon Odori (aka Bon Dance, an event held during O-Bon (August 13 to 15 each year), in which Japanese people honor the spirits of ancestors.), Sports day, softball, etc.
Liaison and coordination between Chonai (neighborhood) and the city
Announcements via flyers and bulletin boards, fielding requests from community residents, communicating with community residents, and implementing adjustments; checking Chonaikai security lamp; reporting disaster victims in the event of natural disasters, etc.
How to join a Chonaikai
- Please contact the ward head or the group leader of Chonaikai who is in charge of your current residential area.
- Once you join a Chonaikai, you will be asked to pay the Chonaikai fees necessary for the Chonaikai project.
- If you are unsure about who your ward head is, please contact the Coordination of Civil Activities Division. We will introduce you to your ward head.
